Gertie helping Daniel hand out the presents.

Marlene and Loren patiently waiting

Gertie made Macy and Daniel quilts for Christmas. She says this is the end of her quilt making days. I hope but not we'll see.

Christmas 2010

The kids putting ornaments on the tree for me. After I begged, pleaded and finally threatened to take all of their presents back.
Christmas eve supper at my mother-in-law's house. Codfish in milk sauce over potatoes. Hmmmm we look forward to it every year!

Thanksgiving

was spent without you. We missed you. A lot. There were tears but smiles as well. I hope you enjoyed your first Thanksgiving in heaven with your mom and pop and your brother Norman. Wish you had been here with us.

Battery Park

The inside of the NY subway!
23rd Street Station

This was outside the World Trade Center and found under smoldering rubble. Damaged but not destroyed. Like the spirit of America. There were hundreds of paper cranes on the ground by the plaque for this sculpture in honor of the people who died that day.

Castle Clinton in Battery Park. Some immigrants were processed at Castle Clinton when Ellis Island was too busy.

And back to New York

EMPIRE STATE BUILDING!! Sleepless in Seattle and countless other movies. We stood in line and took the elevators to the top. The view at dark is breath taking.

Times Square

The view from the Empire State Building

Daniel's 6th grade project

for the first trimester was to make a diorama of a Dakota sugar camp. This was a project that sounded fun but needless to say we didn't just jump right into it. I guess we work well under a short deadline because the finished product earned him an A and turned out pretty cool. Even dad and Macy got into the mix and helped us out.

**I forgot to load them in reverse order. Please look at the pictures from bottom to top as I am too tired to re-load them. Curses blogspot! curses.....

Harbor cruise

Me and my travel pal on the harbor cruise.
The view of Manhattan.

The Manhattan bridge
The Brooklyn Bridge
Miss Liberty at sunset. Beautiful and breathtaking. I was surprised at how close to shore she was. Whenever the Statue of Liberty was talked about I always pictured her out in the harbor away from land - the first land sighting a ship would see but she's actually quite a ways into the harbor. I imagine John's grandparents standing on the deck of the ship that brought them to America and marveling at her. Gertrude told me her mother said everyone on board yelled and screamed with delight at the sight of Lady Liberty.

The Subway!

Ahh the New York Subway system!! What a charming place to meet interesting people!! Actually we had pretty good experiences taking the subway. We learned to follow our tour guide because I never did figure out which ones we were going down and what stop we wanted to get off at. Why did we walk past some and go down others?? Don't have a clue. If I lived there a year, I may not have figured it out. We learned how to swipe our subway cards and get through the sturnstyles in a timely fashion! We learned that there aren't nearly as many homeless people and rats as everyone thinks there are. We only saw one of each! Kind of disappointing!
Swipe your card and go.....
Familiar movie scene? Yup, thank goodness no bad guys with guns though!
Riding the subway is funner with friends! We sure had a good time!

Three months ago I promised you more New York pictures. I guess I've been really busy! Ok probably not THAT busy but I finally got around to uploading more pictures.
"My bags are packed, I'm ready to go".... Good 'ol John Denver really knew how to write a song and it kept floating through my head as we got ready to leave. We flew a Continental Express plane and I was surprised when we boarded to find only one seat on the right side of the plane and two seats across the narrow aisle on the left side. So much for sitting in a cramped space with a stranger! The flight was great going to Newark and we had a lovely stewardess that had a southern accent and a sweet smile. The return flight was another story. We spent a lot of time on the tarmack in Newark waiting for our turn to take off. During the down time, our stewardess took a nap. The twin cities were experiencing severe thunderstorms and as we got closer the turbulence was horrible! The clouds and lightning show were amazing though! The passengers were a bit excited because of the bumpy ride and the spectacular views and we must have made too much of a fuss because at one point, our stewardess appeared in the aisle and glared at us. She was scarier than bouncing around several thousand feet above the ground!

The Shake Shack - home of the best burgers in New York! - was about four blocks from our hotel and is where we had lunch on the first day in the big city. They were awesome and the Shack was located in Madison Square Park, next to the famous Flatiron Building. The wait and line was long but the food was worth it!

See?? Really, really tasty!

Header Picture

is from the museum at Ellis Island. Macy and I went to New York with a school group and visited the place where John's grandparents entered America. It was so amazing to be in the building they were in. The year was 1924 and they arrived with their 8 year old and two year old sons. (There was also one more but he would be born on American soil :-)) It was an incredible trip and one that we will remember forever. More info and pictures to come later!
